What the niche is

Point the camera at a card, get its name, set, condition, and a price. Pokémon, sports, Magic, Lorcana, One Piece. The price comes from eBay sold listings or TCGplayer. The retention loop is the collection: scan everything you own, watch the total move.

Seven sub-niches sit inside it: multi-game scanners (22 apps), Pokémon-only (27), sports cards (30), Magic, Lorcana and One Piece (3), pre-grading before you pay PSA (6), marketplaces you scan into (6), and price guides with sales history (6).

Band: our researched estimate of peak monthly revenue, published only for apps we have researched one by one. Every app in the catalog sits above the $5k a month floor.

Three kinds of app share the top of the niche.

The 2022 incumbents. Collectr, CollX, and Ludex launched within six months of each other and own the ratings mass: 60,820, 45,667, and 26,812. They sell a portfolio and a marketplace. Collectr Pro is $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year. CollX and Ludex run three tiers up to $249 a year for dealers.

The 2025 wave. StarSnap and FoilSnap, both from Next Vision, launched in September and October 2025 and reached 25,540 and 12,376 ratings in under a year. Both sit in the $50–250k band. HoloDex launched the same month and is at 20,660. These sell a scanner first: weekly at $3.99, a year at $39.99. StarSnap adds 2,629 ratings a month, more than any incumbent.

The graders. Digital Grading Co has sold one thing since 2022: an AI grade before you pay PSA. It is in the $250k+ band on 2,512 ratings. That means a high price and a buyer who is about to spend real money.

Foloy launched in June 2026, charges $39.99 with a seven day trial, and is already on the top grossing chart with 1,355 ratings.

How they make money

Two price shapes.

Subscription to the scanner. Weekly $3.99 to $4.99, yearly $29.99 to $39.99, usually behind a scan cap on the free tier. This is how the 2025 wave got to $50–250k in a year.

Subscription to the portfolio. Monthly $5.99 to $9.99, yearly $59.99 to $99.99, with a dealer tier at $24.99 a month. This is the incumbents' model. The scanner is free; the collection tracking and marketplace tools are paid.

The pre-grade upsell sits on top of either: a report that says what PSA would probably give the card, for a buyer deciding whether to spend $20 to $150 on grading.

The angles that get installs

  • scan a collectible, get a resale price45 apps
  • scan the card, get the price42 apps
  • grade the card from a photo7 apps
  • pay per sport for the price guide2 apps

Every leader says a version of "scan it, get a price." Thirteen add sold comps, five add a grade estimate. Three of the twelve leaders mention binder or bulk scanning in their listing; nine lead with one card at a time.

Phrases that recur in one and two star reviews across 9 of the niche's top 12 apps.

Read across twelve apps, the complaints reduce to three.

The price is wrong. Same card, three scans, three prices. A $10 card comes back at $150. A rare comes back at 50 cents. Users compare two apps and call the loser a scam. This complaint runs through all twelve leaders and is the loudest.

The trial charged me. Seven day trial, cancelled inside the window, charged for the year anyway. Ten of twelve apps carry this. Whether or not the charge is the app's fault, the review is.

The free tier fails on the first session. Ten free scans, then a paywall, before the user has scanned enough to trust the price. The first session ends in a wall instead of a total.

What works, from the five star side

Kids and grandparents scanning a binder together. A collection total that goes up. No ads. Those three phrases recur across eleven apps. The emotional product is a number attached to a childhood, and the apps that show that number fast get the five stars.

What to copy and what to avoid

From the price sheets and the pooled reviews above.

Copy: sold comps as the price. Thirteen apps already lead with it, and the wrong-price complaint runs through all twelve leaders.

Copy: the 2025 wave's price shape, $3.99 a week beside a $39.99 year. Both apps that run it reached the $50–250k band within a year of launch.

Avoid: a free tier that ends before the first session does. Ten of twelve leaders draw the complaint that the free scans ran out before the collection was in.

Avoid: a trial that converts without a reminder. Ten of twelve leaders carry that complaint.

Our read: the wrong-price complaint is the opening. It runs through all twelve leaders and it is the loudest complaint in the niche. Rising sits at 0.6x for the three apps with dated reviews: the late 2025 launch spikes are cooling to a steady pace, and the incumbents are flat.

How do card scanner apps make money?

Two shapes. A subscription to the scanner, $3.99 a week or about $39.99 a year behind a scan cap. Or a free scanner with a paid portfolio and marketplace at $5.99 to $9.99 a month and a dealer tier near $25. Grade estimates are the common upsell on both.
