What the niche is

Everyone gets the same secret word. One player gets "IMPOSTER" instead. Each person says one clue, the imposter bluffs, the group votes. Pass the phone, no accounts, no internet, three to nine people in a room.

It sits inside social deduction games, inside party and social games. The design is public domain: Spyfall, Chameleon, Undercover, and Out of the Loop all ran it before 2020. What changed in 2025 is TikTok. Groups film the round, the clip travels, and the app in the clip gets the installs.

Band: our researched estimate of peak monthly revenue, published only for apps we have researched one by one. Every app in the catalog sits above the $5k a month floor.

Three generations share the top.

The 2025 clones. Imposter Game Party Edition, a solo developer's app from May 2025, took the niche in a year: 84,314 ratings, 5,722 a month, and a top free chart placement, on a one-time unlock at $2.99 or $9.99. Fakeit followed in August 2025 and is at 24,628 with 2,068 a month. Who is the Spy from Cosmicode launched September 2025 and is at 6,330. Nine of the top twelve launched in 2025.

The originals. Out of the Loop, from 2018, has 15,023 ratings and four Apple editorial features across 2022 to 2025, including "10 Games to Play With Friends" and "Games for Road Trips". Undercover, from January 2015, holds 3,064 ratings and adds 22 a month. Both sell word packs at $1.99 to $4.99, no subscription.

The one with a band. Imposter AI launched December 2025, generates categories with AI behind its premium tier, and reached the $10–20k band by August 2026 on 1,841 ratings. Its five star reviews name where the users came from: a TikTok account that films game nights.

How they make money

Three shapes.

One-time unlock. Party Edition charges $2.99 or $9.99 for premium access, once. Undercover's full version is $5.99. Imposter Party is $2.99 to $7.99. This is the shape with 84,000 ratings behind it.

Word packs. Out of the Loop sells categories at $1.99 each or five for $4.99. Chameleon sells bundles at $1 to $3 and unlimited rooms for $2. Undercover sells 1,000 words per language at $3.99.

Subscriptions. Fakeit runs weekly at $2.99 to $9.99 and premium at $39.99 to $49.99. Who is the Spy has a $6.99 week, a $29.99 year, and a $29.99 lifetime side by side. Faky is $7.99 to $9.99 a week or $39.99 a year. Who Is It sells a $14.99 month and a $49.99 year. Find the Fake is $2.99 a week.

Six of the twelve leaders run a subscription. The largest of them, Fakeit, is second on ratings. The largest app, Party Edition, sells once.

The angles that get installs

  • imposter game, all players in the room19 apps

Seven of the twelve leaders' listings say offline, one phone, or no internet. Two mention AI: Imposter AI, which generates categories, and Chameleon. Imposter AI's five star reviews name where its users came from: three of its 49 cached reviews cite a TikTok account that films game nights.

What the one star reviews keep saying

  1. “Honestly 4 stars. well really 3.5 but i cant do that, well i dont know how.. some parts arent free but you can still play the game without playing. if it’s to hard for the imposter you can give them a hint. there are 2 v”Imposter Game - Party Edition, 2026-08-04
“play game” recurs in 3 of the top 12 apps
  2. “Me personally I love playing this game, but the reason I gave it one is because of the title”Imposter Game - Party Edition, 2026-06-09
“playing game” recurs in 2 of the top 12 apps
  3. “For context, I downloaded this on an IPhone with iOS 12 and the App Store said that this was compatible but when I tried to open the game, it kept crashing and it is completely unplayable. If the creator of this game see”Imposter Game - Party Edition, 2026-03-01
“please fix” recurs in 2 of the top 12 apps

Phrases that recur in one and two star reviews across 9 of the niche's top 12 apps.

Eleven of twelve leaders have reviews, and the one star side is almost empty. Five recurring phrases, none in more than four apps. That is a reading on its own: a party game played in a room with friends does not generate the angry review a subscription utility does.

What recurs is paying to play: a cap on rooms or word packs, in the one star reviews of five of the eleven leaders. Hints that miss the topic, crashes, and a Wi-Fi requirement appear in one or two reviews each, not across the niche.

What works, from the five star side

Fun with friends, cousins, family, sleepovers, waiting in line at a theme park. Eight of twelve apps get "it's fun" and seven get "great game". The free version is enough, and users say so. One Imposter AI review calls the AI categories "10x more fun". Nobody praises a feature. They praise a night.

What to copy and what to avoid

From the price sheets and the pooled reviews above.

Copy: the one-time unlock. Party Edition sells premium access once at $2.99 or $9.99 and holds 84,314 ratings, more than the other eleven leaders combined. Undercover, Out of the Loop, Chameleon, and Imposter Party also sell once or per pack.

Copy: offline, one phone. Seven of the twelve listings say it, and "play with friends" recurs in the five star reviews of six leaders.

Avoid: a cap on rooms or words that stops a group mid-night. Paying to play is the one complaint that recurs, in five of the eleven leaders with reviews.

Our read: the install channel visible in the data is a filmed round; Imposter AI's reviews cite a TikTok account by name. A category pack a group would film is the angle that follows from it.

Rising needs three apps with dated reviews; this niche has one, at 0.5x its December 2025 launch pace.
